Edinburgh man dies in prison while serving a sentence for gun crime

An Edinburgh criminal who was jailed after being caught with a gun and £33,000 worth of cocaine has died behind bars.

Liam McCaig, 26, died at HMP Edinburgh on Saturday, June 11, the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) has confirmed.

The cause of death has not been disclosed at this stage.

McCaig was found in possession of an illegal firearm and cocaine in a rented garage on Berrywell Road in Aberdeen.

He was sentenced to five years in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2019.

SPS chiefs said a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course and police were advised of the death which will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

An SPS spokesperson said: "Liam McCaig, 26, a prisoner from HMP Edinburgh died on June, 11 2022.

"He was sentenced at Edinburgh High Court in 2019.

"Police Scotland have been advised and the matter will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
