Edinburgh ‘ghost sign’ uncovered in Leith street brings back memories for locals

An old sign for one of Edinburgh’s long lost wine merchants has been spotted in the capital.

The space, which is now occupied by an Art Gallery, has maintained the centuries old signage for Charles Campbell spirit merchant - established in 1840. Posting in the Lost Edinburgh Facebook Page, Craig Gorman wrote: “Ghost sign spotted at 24 Portland Place - Charles Campbell established 1840, used to be the old Sports Bar.

The building has had many lives since 1840, and was known as the Caley Bar to many. Discussing the long gone pub in Lost Edinburgh, John Stevenson commented: “It was a good old fashioned ‘workies pub’ in my days, great fun and banter - pubs like that are all gone now sadly.”
