Edinburgh Fringe comedian hits back after man makes 'creepy comment' to her

A Scottish comedian has hit out at an audience member after they made a vile sexist heckle at her Fringe show.

Marjolein Robertson, a popular stand-up and TikToker from Shetland, had travelled to Edinburgh along with hundreds of others to take her set to the festival. Performing at the Stand Comedy Club on Wednesday, Marjolein had been fully into her set when a male member of the audience said he had been 'imagining her naked.'

Making a reference back to an earlier joke in her show, Thank God Fish Don't Have Hands, the comedian took to social media to tell followers how the comments made her feel 'dirty' and 'horrible.' In a video, she said: "Today I was doing my Fringe show and there's a certain part where I ask someone to imagine a landmark of a city of their choice and I guess it, and I worked with this audience member and the bit went well.

"But then we moved onto another part of the show and then they piped up voluntarily and this man was saying 'I didn't actually imagine Rome, I was actually imaging you naked. It was horrible and the whole room was like 'ugh', I always wondered what I would do with a bad heckler comment and I was quite proud of myself because in the moment I just verbally took him right down while making the room laugh.

"But at the time it was horrible because no matter how far you get as a woman in comedy and making the room laugh and having the gig in your hands, when you get a s****y comment like that it makes you feel dirty. It's not on, don't be a heckler, don't be a creep and don't view a woman at her work as your misguided sexual fantasy."

Quick to support Marjolein, hundreds of fans and followers responded to the post, with many branding the man's actions as "awful" and "degrading."

However, despite the heckle, Marjolein was still able to carry on with her show, with the one-hour performance already receiving glowing reviews. You can buy tickets for Marjolein Robertson: Thank God Fish Don't Have Hands here.
