Edinburgh Fringe 2022: Eight times top celebrities were spotted at the festival

Edinburgh has not only been home to many celebrities over the years, but is also a popular place for stars to come visit, especially during Fringe season.

With the annual festival almost upon us, and hundreds of shows lined up across the capital in the month of August, we thought it was only fair that we looked back on the times that famous faces graced our streets.

Read on below for some of the most famous sightings that Edinburgh Festival Fringe had to offer.

John Bishop - 2014

Comedian John Bishop is no stranger to the streets of Edinburgh, as he travelled to the capital to perform his Work in Progress show back in 2014.

Posing for a selfie on Twitter, John wrote: "A lovely day in Edinburgh. When I get out of the wind and the clouds pass it's nearly warm enough to take my hat off."

Listen John, not all of us can enjoy the sunny weather of Liverpool 24/7, right?

As well as his Work in Progress shows at The Stand Comedy Club, Bishop also hosted a charity gig in Edinburgh that same year, featuring some other famous faces in the line-up.

Other celebrities at that event included Jason Manford, Jason Byrne, Lloyd Langford, Pete Firman and James Acaster.

Courtney Act - 2018

Drag Race royalty Courtney Act was in and about Edinburgh in 2018, meeting fans after her 'Under The Covers' show at the Underbelly Circus Hub.

The 2018 Celebrity Big Brother winner was dressed in a long, flowing dress and cosy jacket as she hugged excited fans during the day.

The Scottish climate was probably also a bit much for the Australian loyal, but at least she didn't complain as much as Mr Bishop!

Charlie Brooker - 2013

English television presenter Charlie Brooker was spotted by a Twitter user boosting through the streets of Edinburgh at the Fringe in 2013.

Writing on the social media website, the Twitter user said: "Today's Edinburgh fringe celebrity spot - @charltonbrooker dashing past with his headphones on."

The social critic was performing at the Fringe in 2013 with a rather rude show title...'K*** and the gang'!

Dubbed as 'Not for the easily offended', and a sell-out across the board, it seems the performer got off on the right foot with the Edinburgh crowd!

Phil Jupitus and Anneka Rice - 2015

Another sighting in the form of a tweet - Edinburgh locals are respectful of celebrity privacy - was in 2015 for two stars at once!

Phil Jupitus, English stand-up act, and Anneka Rice, TV presenter, were spotted at the same time by a starstruck bystander at the Fringe in 2015.

The Twitter user said: "Edinburgh Fringe celebrity sightings: Phil Jupitus and Anneka Rice. Pretty happy with that."

Anneka was busy hosting shows at the Fringe in 2015, whereas Phil had his own spot in the line-up for the Loving Linda Smith Gala Concert: In Aid of Target Ovarian Cancer, alongside a host of other stars.

Also in the line-up were Jo Brand, Mark Thomas, Susan Calman and Liz Lochhead, to name a few.

Charles Martinet - 2019

It's-a me, Mario! That's right, the voice of both Super Mario and Luigi was spotted hanging around the Fringe in 2019 - just before it all went (Under)belly-up and we were locked in Bowser's Castle for a few years.

A Twitter user wrote: "Bumping into celebrities at the Edinburgh fringe is great, I’ve just met Super Mario himself."

Another replied: "Charles Martinet?", to which the original poster said: "I said what I said!"

Charles Martinet is well known for his portrayal of both Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario video game series since 1992.

He is also the voice of other characters in the series such as Wario and Waluigi, so we had a video game icon just strolling around the city centre!

Marcus Brigstocke and Phil Wang - 2019

Comedians and writers tend to rub shoulders often, and appearing at the Fringe is no exception to this rule.

Journalist Conor Matchett was at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and decided to play a little celebrity bingo to pass the time.

Fortunately, he did not have to wait long for his first spots to go on the board, as Conor tweeted: "Day one of being in the centre of Edinburgh around Fringe time and Celebrity Bingo has already claimed Marcus Brigstocke and Phil Wang as early victims."

Marcus Brigstocke, a British comedian, and Phil Wang, a British-Malaysian writer, were both travelling around the capital in 2019 for the festival.

Marcus took his Devil May Care on a limited tour run in the month of August 2019 in Edinburgh, and Phil brought his comedy special Philly Philly Wang Wang to the capital in the same year.
