A young woman has told of how she narrowly avoided being hit by an irate driver that mounted the pavement to perform a u-turn on a busy city street.
Ellie Brown, 23, said that the incident happened at around 5:40pm on the A1140 in Portobello. She says that she was walking along the main road by The Scottie pub and that traffic was at a standstill.
But within a flash she alleges that the driver mounted the kerb to perform a u-turn which forced her against the wall. She says that if the car had entered the kerbside by a foot or so then it may have crashed into the wall or more worryingly, her leg.

The shocked pedestrian feared that she may have been hit during the ordeal. Unbelievably, she claims that the motorist began to shout abuse at her as his passenger laughed beside him.
On the “looney driver”, the Tesco shop assistant said: “I was walking along the main road on the pavement as you come up to Scottie’s in Portobello at around 5.40pm. The traffic was at a standstill going into Portobello.
“This guy did a u-turn right in the middle of the road and came up onto the pavement. He came so far that I was forced to move up against the wall - if he had gone any further he could have hit me or crashed into the wall.
“Others must have seen the incident as traffic was at a standstill. He had the cheek to stop his car and hurl abuse at me whilst his passenger laughed his head off.
“He told us to shut up as I shouted ‘what are you doing? You nearly ran us over’ but he just told us to f**k off. I got my phone out and took pictures of his car.
“I can’t stress enough how close he was and how he mounted the pavement. I was actually shocked!
“I wasn’t even looking into the road as I was walking straight ahead on the pavement. I literally looked down and his car was so close to my leg.
“The next time it could be an old person or a kid who are unable to move out of the way and may not be so lucky.”
