Edinburgh driver left shaken after 'hit and run' on busy city centre road

An Edinburgh man has told how he was left shaken after being involved in a hit and run.

Matthew McCann was driving his Audi in Gorgie on Saturday when he claims an old Ford Transit van cut across into his lane on Westfield Road.

The 26-year-old, who was on his way to visit his grandmother, says he was making his way along the busy road when the van appeared from nowhere and cut into the lane in front of him.

Forced into an emergency stop, Matthew says he was still unable to avoid clipping the back of the vehicle.

The front side of Matthew's car was heavily damaged and he was left stranded in the middle of the road, holding up fellow motorists.

Matthew recalled the aftermath of the incident being suspicious as he said the van entered the Sainsbury's car park opposite where the collision took place, and circled for a few minutes, before making off.

Police Scotland confirmed that they are enquiring into the full circumstances of the incident, adding they are aware that the van failed to stop after the collision.

Matthew, 26, said: "I was just coming down the West Approach road to the busy junction, it goes into two lanes, there's a car to the right of me, and all of a sudden this old rusty transit van cuts ahead of me and I'm forced to emergency stop.

"I went straight into the van, but thankfully it wasn't a huge collision, but there was significant damage to my car. The van actually drove into the Salisbury's car park just opposite and does several laps, as if they were debating what to do next.

"In the meantime, I was on the phone to the police, but nobody was stopping to help me. When I saw the van emerging from the car park, I thought great they're coming over to help, but they just sped off."

Matthew couldn't believe what he was seeing and started shouting out the number plate of the van as it drove into the distance, to try and memorise it.

After remembering the plate and jotting it down, Matthew was left to wait for half an hour on the police coming to his aid, but they never arrived.

He continued: "Cars didn't stop at all, I tried to flag people down but everyone just kept driving past. I just thought at least I'm okay, it could have been much worse.

"On the phone to the police, they said someone would be sent out to help and after half an hour, they phoned to say that actually, nobody could come and I was to nurse the car back home. At this point, I didn't know if it was drivable or not, but couldn't believe I was to just drive away. Thankfully most of the damage is cosmetic.

"Luckily, Sainsbury's have captured footage of the van in the car park, and the police are looking into the incident.

Thankfully for Matthew, his parents live in Corstorphine, so after a ten-minute drive he was back home safely. Unfortunately though, he's having to claim off his insurance as he says the other driver made off without even checking he was okay.

Matthew added: "To be honest, I wish I had done more damage to the van so then it couldn't just drive off. I was just in shock after it happened.

"Luckily for me, the car is just for social purposes and I don't rely on it for work."

Matthew also made an appeal on Facebook to anyone in the area at the time who may have dashcam footage or witnessed the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "Around 12pm on Saturday, 19 March, police were called to the Westfield Road area of Edinburgh, following a report of a crash involving a car and a van. The van did not stop at the scene and enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
