Edinburgh dog owner 'couldn't walk for days' after trip on broken pavement

A dog owner from Edinburgh has told how she couldn't walk for days after a nasty fall due to a broken pavement in Leith.

Yvonne Wilson, from Leith, was out walking her dog when she slipped on the damaged pavement near her house, ending up with a swollen knee she could not walk on.

Luckily she did not have to go to the hospital for the trip but was left in agony and has several friends who have suffered similar incidents in the area.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Yvonne, 68, said: "About three weeks ago now I was out with my wee dog about 9pm and I fell on the pavement at Lorne Street.

"The streets are treacherous. There's at least one other person I know who has had a really bad fall there. I managed to keep a hold of my dog's lead thankfully, but there was no one around to help me up.

"There was a white car parked and I managed to pull myself up by hanging on to the door handle.

"I then felt ill the rest of the night. Later I emailed the council and have heard nothing back but it doesn't surprise me. They're not interested.

"My youngest daughter who is an orthopaedic nurse came along to have a look at my knee. I couldn't walk for a few days and it ached from head to toe."

She continued: "It's about time something was done about the state of these pavements. My neighbour upstairs had a really bad fall a few months ago as well, just down the road on Leith Walk.

"Some of the side streets were hammered with heavy equipment going back and forward for months. These streets are not designed for heavy traffic or buses."

A spokesperson for the City of Edinburgh Council said: "I can confirm that we received a report via our online reporting system and this will be inspected and actioned as per our operational guidelines.

"Anyone who feels the Council is liable for an incident can submit a compensation claim for any injuries via our website or over the phone."
