Edinburgh diner at New Town restaurant overhears 'rude comment' made by staff about them

A disgruntled customer vowed that they will ‘not be rushing back’ to a New Town eatery after a member of staff was rude to their party.

The customer took to TripAdvisor to complain about the level of service they received and said that they had overheard a member of staff say to a colleague “get them to f**king move” after they had been advised to stand at the bar as they changed tables.

Rabble Taphouse and Grill on Frederick Street were criticised for the behaviour of this staff member and the unhappy diner left the eatery a two star review on the popular site.

They said that they accepted that service was a little slow due to how busy the restaurant was but where they were unhappy was when a staff member reacted angrily to their party of eight standing by the bar service area whilst they moved table.

In a review left on December 19 2022, user cocomocha said: “We had a booking for the table we were at, we enjoyed our drinks and our time there. The service was a little slow but this was understandable given the fact that they were busy.

“The service waiters/waitresses were all very nice. But the reason for the score is for what happened when we had to give up our table for another booking - there were eight of us.

“We then stood by the bar. We hadn’t realised this was the service area.

“The waitress let me know we couldn’t stand there but while in the process of getting everyones order from the bar and paying, one of the bar staff shouted at the waitress who was beside me angrily twice to “get them to f**kin’ move.”

I don’t know if you’ve tried to organise eight people floating about a bar from three different angles. It takes a couple of minutes.

“It was absolutely unnecessary, as we were moving.”

The manager at Rabble Taphouse & Grill, responded courteously to the review however on December 21 and apologised for the language used. They thanked the customer for leaving their review and invited them back with a round of drinks on the house.

They said: “Firstly, I do apologise that you were spoken to like that- totally unacceptable. December can be very stressful for our staff but I agree that this is no excuse to be rude.

“I can assure you that we always strive to provide excellent customer service and I do apologise that on this occasion we let you down! We have absolutely taken your feedback on board and are dealing with the situation appropriately.

“I'd hate for this to be your lasting impression of Rabble so if you do wish to pop back in the new year please email us and we will get you a round of drinks on us to apologise!

“Thanks again and we hope to see you in 2023!”

Despite the unfavourable review, the city centre restaurant has been well received by other customers, with one taking to TripAdvisor to praise the business.

NessieFifeScotland said on the site: "Booked my daughter-in-law's baby shower and this place cannot be faulted. From booking, arriving , food service and drinks it was all extremely good.

"All the staff were very friendly and were more than happy with us up putting up banners and balloons, when I offered to tidy them up , they told me not to worry they would do it.

"Food was lovely and all 10 meals served at same time - that is a bonus in my book.

"On any occasion I have been in rabble i have always received and observed the same friendly customer service. great team."

TimeaV also praised the restaurant by saying: "Lovely and cozy place with very friendly staff. I would definitely come back the next time I visit Edinburgh. Definitely recommend."

Rabble Taphouse and Grill has four out of five stars on Trip Adviser and ranks in the top 20 per cent of eateries in the capital.
