Edinburgh councillor slams dangerous parents that abandon cars on double yellows

A local Edinburgh councillor has slammed careless parents for creating a dangerous environment at the Gyle Park in South Gyle.

Mark Brown, who is a Tory councillor for the Drumbrae and Gyle ward, had shared pictures of cars parked up on grass verges and over double yellow lines in the popular park.

The area is often used by youth sport teams over the weekends and can see hundreds of visitors through its gates.

But the parking of cars on the David Lloyd arterial road that feeds off of Glasgow Road has been raised as a major issue by local residents and those trying to use the park as well as gym safely.

As a result of the issue, Cllr Brown says that he is working closely with the group ‘Friends of the Gyle Park’ and Edinburgh City Council to bring about a solution to the issue.

Cllr Brown said: “I have been working with a number of stakeholders in order to improve safety for all park users.

“It is disappointing and frustrating that a minority of people continue to disregard the local environment and not only park on the double yellows but cause damage to the park by constantly parking on it.

“I have written to the CEO of Edinburgh Leisure asking that they request users refrain from doing so.

“As part of the ongoing safety project, we are working with the council and Friends of the Gyle Park to further mitigate the issues we see in these photos.

“In the meantime, I’d urge those who attend fixtures at Gyle Park to respect one of the key green space areas in West Edinburgh.”

The Cllr compares how the road should look with a photo that shows the road clear of traffic yesterday, Saturday 23 April, with another from this afternoon, Sunday 24 April, that shows cars abandoned on double yellow lines.

He called on both Police Scotland and the local council to resolve the issue.
