Edinburgh councillor hits out after motorists 'ignore' road signs near primary school

An Edinburgh councillor has hit out after motorists 'illegally' turned onto a street outside a local primary school.

Taking to Twitter to vent his frustration, Liberal Democrats Councillor Jack Caldwell, shared a picture of the street outside Leith Walk Primary School and said that in just ten minutes, he witnessed seven drivers turning onto a "green man."

Suggesting that children could potentially be in danger due to motorists turning onto the street to which they are not permitted, Caldwell said that since raising concerns, an extra sign has gone up.

Already situated at the traffic lights on Leith Walk is a no left turn sign signalling towards Brunswick Road, although motorists appear to in need of a more visible reminder that they can not access the street.

Tweeting about the issue, councillor Caldwell said: "Monitored seven drivers in ten minutes alone illegally turning left into a green-man outside Leith Walk Primary School.

"Thanks to parents contacting me & quick response from @TramstoNewhaven engineers, extra sign went up. Please note you can only go down Brunswick Road from McDonald Road!"

He added: "I get the frustration of the Leith Walk left-turn situation & understand more will be opened soon (like Dalmeny St last weekend) but literally no excuse for threatening to run down a school lollipop person at a green man. Shameful & needs called out."

Caldwell continued to say that Edinburgh Police are monitoring the situation and that after the additional sign went up, there were no drivers attempting to access the street via Leith Walk.

He said: "I monitored after sign went up & not a single driver turning now. But it shouldn't have to be spelled out. If you can't see the 'no left turns' on the lights themselves then that's simply not fit and proper driving."
