Edinburgh Council say brown bin registration is open but they are charging £35 for the service

Edinburgh residents who want a brown bin for garden waste can sign up now but it will cost £35 per year.

The City of Edinburgh Council have opened registrations for people wanting their garden waste lifted every two weeks.

But they will have to pay for the service, with a £35 payment to cover one year.

This year’s registration already started last year but the council has extended the registration period so anyone signing up now will have their permit valid until November of this year.

A spokesperson explained: “To make it easier for you to register for our garden waste service, we have extended the registration period.

"We will process applications at the end of every month and it will take around four weeks to do this, including adding addresses to our routes.

“This means that if you registered in January, for example, we will send your permit to you in February and your first collection will be within the first two weeks of March, with the exact date dependent on your collection calendar for your street.

“If you stay in a traditional tenement, with the numbering system 1F1, 1F2, please use this format when registering. The flat numbers follow the flow of the staircase, for each floor. For example, 3F2 should be interpreted as 3rd floor, flat 2, which is the second flat from the stair.

“If you want to share a bin with your neighbours, you will need to agree on one resident acting as the lead in paying for the service against their address and reporting any issues.”

Local residents can register on behalf of someone else, if they are unable to but new applications have to be made every year.
