Edinburgh Council issue update ahead of beloved LOVE Gorgie Farm closure

The City of Edinburgh Council has issued an update ahead of the closure of beloved LOVE Gorgie Farm.

This comes as a number of organisations have come forward to express an interest in taking over the running of Gorgie Farm. One prominent organisation includes Edinburgh Zoo.

While a decision still has to be made, the council has said it is looking to see if the animals can stay on site while the search continues for new owners. The farm is set to shut its doors on Monday.

Two weeks ago Gorgie Farm's operators, Love Learning announced they were forced to close the farm, that is loved by locals and offers a foodbank, due to the impact of the pandemic and rising cost of living.

City of Edinburgh Council Leader Cammy Day said that Council officers will be meeting the interested organisations over the coming days to discuss their proposals.

Cllr Day updated a cross-party group of Councillors and local MSPs about the latest developments at a special meeting in the City Chambers this afternoon.

He said: “It’s really encouraging to have these organisations telling us they would be interested in taking over the running of Gorgie Farm. Obviously it is still very early in the process but we’ll be meeting with them over the coming days to hear exactly what they have to say and their ideas for the site.

“Everyone knows what a unique and much-loved community asset Gorgie Farm is and it was sad to hear Love Learning’s announcement last month that they are closing. There has been an outpouring of support expressed for the farm and willingness from community groups, the public and local politicians to help find a solution.

“Although it is scheduled to shut its doors to the public on Monday we’ll look to see if there is any way of keeping the animals on site until a decision is made on its future. I’ve held a positive meeting this afternoon with local politicians and agreed to keep them updated with developments over the coming days.”
