Edinburgh commuters to expect disruption as resurfacing work to take place on M8

Commuters have been told to expect disruption during the start of November as resurfacing work is set to take place on the M8 eastbound.

Overnight carriageway closures will be in place from November 2-4 as 1.2 kilometres at Junction 5 by Shotts in West Lothian. In order to ensure that workers resurfacing the stretch of road are kept safe, the M8 eastbound between Junction 5 and Junction 4A will be closed from 8:30pm until 06:00am across the three nights.

Traffic Scotland’s operating company, BEAR Scotland, have said that clear directions will be in place for eastbound traffic that will direct commuters off the M8 at Junction 5 and along the B7066 before re-joining the M8 at Junction 4A. The diversion will mean that drivers should plan to travel an extra 0.3miles and that five minutes will be added to journey times.

Those responsible for the works have said that emergency vehicles will be able to gain access at all times.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will improve ride quality and safety for road users on this section of the M8.

“Carriageway closures are essential for safety during the works, however we’ve planned them to take place overnight to minimise any disruption.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience.”

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to share information about the project in advance.

Real time journey information is available from the Traffic Scotland website here or through their Twitter: @trafficscotland.
