An Independent Edinburgh business owner has expressed fears over the ‘catastrophic’ impact of climate change on his industry, after new research found coffee could be ‘endangered’ by 2050.
Fairtrade published a report which found that - under certain scenarios - as much of the 50 per cent of the global surface area currently being used for coffee farming may no longer be suitable by 2050, due to climate change.
However, coffee roasters and cafe owners operating in Scotland believe the threat of global warming is more imminent, with renowned coffee regions having already had large quantities of their harvests wiped out by frost and drought in recent years.
