Edinburgh climate activists 'deflate tyres on 45 SUVs' ahead of Festival Fringe

Eco-group The Tyre Extinguishers claim to have 'disarmed' 45 vehicles in Edinburgh overnight on Wednesday, as another warning has been given to those who choose to drive 'gas-guzzling' SUVs.

The climate activist group have made themselves known all over the country, and further afield, since the start of the year, with multiple neighbourhoods in Edinburgh being targeted.

Owners of SUVs have grown tired of their tyres being deflated, with many not being able to make important journey's after realising their car is out of action.

On Wednesday night, July 6, The Tyre Extinguishers said they targeted 45 SUV's in the Dean area of Edinburgh, near the popular Dean Village and Stockbridge. Their actions are in light of next month's Festival Fringe, which will see an influx of tourists coming to the capital.

They announced responsibility for the latest movement on Twitter, saying: "EDINBURGH FESTIVAL-GOERS TOLD: LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME AS TX DEFLATE 45 SUVS IN EDINBURGH Edinburgh Tyre Extinguishers issued a warning to tourists attending next month’s @edintfest as 45 SUVs were disarmed in the city last night, in the posh Dean area."

They added: "In August each year, the city population swells from 500,000 to over 1.5 million as @edintfest and @edfringe take over the city. This brings with it hundreds of thousands of cars, clogged roads, polluted air, illegal parking and extra danger to other road users."

Amy Kidd from Edinburgh Tyre Extinguishers said: "If you're visiting Edinburgh for the festival, leave your polluting SUV at home, otherwise you might wake up to find lentils in the tyres. We're happy for you to visit the city, just don't choke our lungs and clog up our streets doing it."

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.

Areas such as Eton Terrace, Belgrave Crescent, Belgrave Place, Lennox Street, Oxford Terrace were targeted on Wednesday night, with the group showing no signs of easing their presence in the capital. Leith, Morningside and Portobello are areas in which SUVs have reportedly been 'disarmed' in recent months.
