Edinburgh city centre Bank of Scotland joins list of local branches set to close

A third Edinburgh Bank of Scotland branch has fallen victim to an increase in online banking and is set to close in the coming months.

Following the announcement that both the Shandwick Place and Barnton locations will be closing, the Bank of Scotland on the Royal Mile is also to shut down.

The news comes following a huge list of branch closures across Scotland due to changing banking habits of customers, most of whom have turned to the world of online and digital banking instead of visiting in-store.

The Old Town branch, at 300 Lawnmarket, is set to close its doors on July 26, with the nearest location being George Street.

A review of the branch's performance and reasons for its closure on the Bank of Scotland website says: "Like many other high street businesses, we’ve seen people using our branches less frequently in recent years as more customers choose to do most of their everyday banking online.

"We’re responding to the way our customers use our branches. We’ll continue to invest in our branch network, but we have to make sure our branches are where customers need and use them most. As a result, we've made the difficult decision to close this branch due to customers using it less often.

"In addition, the majority of customers are also using alternative ways to bank and we have another branch close-by. What this means for you - You can use any of our branches and our nearest alternative is the Edinburgh George Street branch. You can also use a Post Office for your everyday banking."

We previously reported how stores on Shandwick Place and Queensferry Road have fallen victim to the changing habits of customers, with those two branches both set to close on July 13.

Elsewhere, in the Lothians, the last remaining Bank of Scotland in the East Lothian town of Tranent is to close on July 27, leaving locals devastated. In West Lothian, Broxburn's Bank of Scotland is to close on August 9.
