Edinburgh city bypass locked down as huge vehicle fire halts traffic

Emergency services were called to the A720 at Gilmerton shortly before 7pm following reports of a blaze on November 17.

A large section of the Edinburgh city bypass is now locked down as several fire engines battle the huge flames that engulfed a white van on the motorway.

Police and the Scottish Fire Service remain at the scene and there are currently no reports of any casualties. Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

An eyewitness at the scene told Edinburgh Live: "Several cars on the rear are engulfed in flames, I was one of the first on scene and witnessed it going up on my first pass and turned at the next exit.

"It could only have been five minutes before the entire truck and cars were engulfed. Massive explosions are going off and you can feel the heat through the glass from 100 meters away!

"There were flaming parts of debris flying into the opposite side of the bypass."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire Service said: "They received a call at 18.56 reporting a van was on fire at the Gilmerton Sherrifhall junction eastbound."
