Edinburgh Christmas market could be cancelled after organisers pull out

Edinburgh’s Christmas market could be cancelled after organisers withdrew from the event weeks before its launch.

The winter market, which was forced to stop during the coronavirus pandemic, is now less likely to happen again this year due to the pull-out.

Angels Event Management, who secured the Christmas market contract in June, has informed council bosses that they will not be able to organise the event.

The 2022 market has been due to take place between November 19 and January 3, and would be the first full event since the pandemic.

What has Edinburgh City Council said about the Christmas market?

While council bosses attempt to put in place alternative plans, council leader Cammy Day said: “We’re hugely disappointed that Angels Event Experience Ltd have been unable to deliver on their contract to produce Edinburgh’s Christmas.

"We’re in positive ongoing discussions around ensuring that Christmas events can be successfully delivered for the city this year."

Is the Edinburgh Christmas market 2022 cancelled?

While the 2022 market’s future looks less certain, it is understood that the council is speaking with other event management firms to ensure the fair takes place.

What happens at the market?

The traditional location of the Edinburgh Christmas market is the Princes Street Gardens and the Mound.

This year the fair was expected to expand to new parts of the city and include artisan markets for Scottish produce as well as a Santa land.

Theme park rides, arts and crafts stalls and entertainment areas were also to be present.

With the recent pull-out by the organiser, these plans may be subject to change.
