Edinburgh Christmas markets have become an iconic feature over the years with thousands attending it through the festive season.
While the future of the stalls were briefly uncertain, it gave us a chance to think back at what they have been like previously. Of course, with every year they have been there, the smell of the Bratwurst and Pretzels fills the mound.
The first Christmas markets started in 1999, as the German Markets in the city centre and since then the event has grown and attracted more and more visitors to the city.

Traditionally Edinburgh over Christmas and New Year is filled with markets, fairground rides and a fire parade which starts the city's Hogmanay festival. However, over the last couple of years we have seen a change in events.
Edinburgh Christmas 2022
This year, despite fears it would be scrapped over a change in ownership, Edinburgh Christmas markets and attractions are returning on November 25. As is the iconic Hogmanay event which has been held in Stirling over the last two years - though Stirling only had a firework display at the bells which was shown across BBC.
The markets and core attractions such as Forth 1's Big Wheel and the ice rink at George Square is returning, as is Santa Land in West Princes Street Gardens.
However, due to funds, it was announced that the famous torchlight procession at Hogmanay will not go ahead.
ScotRail also announced that Santa Express which gave kids an action packed 'Polar Express' journey will also be scrapped.
Edinburgh Christmas 2021
In 2021, the Christmas Markets and attractions were in full swing. By November 2021, there were limited covid restrictions for outside gatherings and visitors did not, by law, have to wear masks.
However, attendees took to social media to share how packed the Christmas markets were and organisers advised people to wear face masks.
Edinburgh's Christmas did operate at a reduced capacity in 2021, according to Underbelly, which allowed additional space for people when moving through the site.
All visitors were asked to register their contact details ahead of entering the site by way of scanning a QR code whilst in the queuing system and at entrances. There was also signage throughout the site and queueing system which encouraged visitors to wear a mask and to keep their distance from other groups.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay event that usually sees a street party, concerns and a torchlight procession were cancelled for a second time and an official firework display was moved to Stirling and took place at the William Wallace Monument.
Edinburgh Christmas 2020
As the pandemic spread across the globe, Edinburgh's Winter Festival was scrapped, as was the Hogmanay event. A firework display took place in Stirling instead but there was no Christmas market or mulled wine filling the city centre.
