Cakes are baked and decorated by volunteers who will pay for ingredients for the sponge but will be provided with icing, fondant and boards for decorating.
They are looking for some generous volunteers to commit to one cake a month for a child in need.
Children will often request a specific theme of birthday cake and previous bakers have provided Pokemon, animal and princess themed cakes.
The charity posted their plea to social media. They said: “Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are baked by volunteers with kid’s favourite theme or style.
“We are looking for more Bakers to join us.”
Any willing volunteers can email freecakesforkidsedinburgh@gmail.com to get involved.
