Edinburgh CAMRA pub of the year is cosy secret basement bar with roaring fire

When it comes to drinking spots in the capital, we are spoiled for choice, with swish wine bars, old-school boozers, top cocktail lounges and craft beer specialists aplenty.

However, when it comes to getting yourself a proper pint, then it appears beer fans should be heading to one pub in particular.

The Jolly Judge has just been picked out by The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), as their Pub of the Year for Edinburgh, narrowly beating last year's winners (and five-time champs) the Dreadnought in Leith.

Boasting one of the best selections of real ale in the city, the unassuming basement bar, with its low ceiling, wooden beams and cosy atmosphere has captured the hearts of the beer specialists beating out the Stockbridge Tap in second place and the Roseburn Bar and Dreadnought in joint third.

Not only that, but the vote at the end of February, also named the Jolly Judge the overall Cider Pub of the Year, making it a double whammy.

It'll now go head to head with the Staggs in Musselburgh, which won the Lothians crown, and the Allanton Inn, which took the Borders, for the overall crown.

Described as a "snug little howff with a cosy 17th-century atmosphere" by influential travel guide Lonely Planet, the Judge lies just off the Royal Mile at Milne Court Close and regularly wins plaudits for its comfy atmosphere and extensive beer range.

One recent reviewer posted: "Great little pub, friendly staff, competitively priced drinks. Hidden away, very cosy. Liked it a lot."

While another added: "Love coming to this pub. Really quaint and atmospheric. Cosy inside with a good selection of drinks - try the Leith Pils, it’s really good. You feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you’re here."

Posting on their website, the CAMRA team wrote: "Every year local CAMRA members vote to select Pubs of the Year for Edinburgh, Lothian and the Borders.

"To be considered, a pub must consistently sell real ale in good condition as measured by members' beer scores.

"Members then judge the pub on the quality of the real ale and other aspects such as the service, welcome, atmosphere, style, decor, value for money and community focus."

Posting on Facebook, the Jolly Judge team said: "It is a real honour to have been voted Edinburgh Pub of the Year & Cider Pub of the Year by CAMRA Edinburgh and South East Scotland! Thanks for enjoying the cask ale and cider."
