Edinburgh bypass delays as broken down vehicle blocks lane and causes tailbacks

Queues have started to build on a busy Edinburgh bypass as a broken down vehicle has restricted one of two lanes.

The A720 Westbound between Gilmerton and Sheriffhall is one of the busiest commuter routes in and out of the city and one of the lanes on the bypass has been blocked due to a broken down vehicle this afternoon, April 12.

Traffic Scotland alerted travellers to the blockage via Twitter, just before 3pm.

They said: "Lane two of two blocked westbound between Gilmerton and Sheriffhall due to a broken down vehicle.

"Traffic slowing on approach."

A picture captured by the bypass camera shows the unfortunate motorist stranded in the middle of the lane, trying to get their vehicle going again, as huge queues start to pile up behind.

Traffic is moving even slower this afternoon due to poor weather conditions, so motorists approaching this section of the busy bypass should exercise caution.

Cars can be seen filing into the one lane that remains open for now as the driver of the vehicle just happens to have stopped opposite an emergency layby.
