Edinburgh bus driver knocks DPD driver's tooth out during violent road rage rammy

An Edinburgh bus driver punched and kicked a fellow motorist during a physical road rage rammy in a busy area of the capital.

Steven Stewart was behind the wheel of the double decker on Leith Walk when he spotted a DPD delivery van belonging to his victim parked up on a kerb.

The 49-year-old then got into a verbal spat with the delivery driver before 'losing the plot' and leaping from his cab into the the DPD van. Stewart repeatedly rained punches onto the 37-year-old's head and body which resulted in the man's tooth 'going flying', reports the Record.

Stewart was ordered to pay a compensation fee of £200 and walked free from court on March 15, a decision which left his victim, who asked not to be named, gobsmacked.

He said: "Him getting a £200 fine is an absolute insult.

"This guy completely lost the plot in a road rage attack and has basically walked away with no real punishment. I was literally just doing my job dropping off a big box of books to a store.

"I was bumped up on the curb near a big bus stop that can hold three double deckers. But there was no one there at all and I was only there for literally a minute making a delivery.

"When I came back out, his bus had then pulled right in front of my vehicle and boxed me in. He was clearly looking for bother. As I've gone to drive away, he's waiting for me with his window down so he was clearly wanting words.

"There were verbals exchanged between the two of us. Next thing, he jumped out his cabin and opened up my van door. He's grabbing me by the jumper, shouting at me.

"A witness came over and he tried to start a fight with the witness. At this point, I thought he had gone so I dusted myself down. But then he punched me from the side and my tooth went flying.

"I ended up curling like a ball because I didn't know what was happening and I wanted to keep an eye on where my tooth had landed. He was punching me on the head and the body. Guys from the tram works came over and dragged him off."

After waiting for a colleague to come and collect his van following the terrifying ordeal, the victim had to make his way to an emergency dentist appointment where he was forced to fork out £150 to have his tooth put back in.

He added: "You don't realise how much your whole facial features completely change when you've had your front tooth knocked out. It was horrendous. When I was standing there with my tooth in my hand, a witness, who ironically didn't have any teeth, started telling me to put it in milk.

"He then went off to a wee cafe and got me some in a tub. When I went to the dentist that day, I sheepishly walked in and said to her not to laugh. She told me that had actually saved my tooth.

"So they managed to put the original tooth back in. I've still got a brace on it which isn't the most flattering thing in the world but it's better than looking like Oor Wullie."

Stewart, from Leith, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week where he pleaded guilty to assaulting the delivery driver by repeatedly punching him on the head and body on December 23 last year.

Lothian Buses have been contacted for comment.
