Edinburgh bar forced to use candles after power cuts plunge firms into darkness

Businesses on West Maitland Street have complained that their units have had recurring power cuts that last for hours on end.

The city centre street experienced a power cut on Sunday 10 April that apparently last for around two hours and also had another power cut on Tuesday 12 April that lasted for a similar time.

Costcutters, Istanbul VIP Barbers and Mercat Bar and Kitchen were all impacted as were other stores in the area.

Shoppers were left sifting through their pockets looking for cash in order to buy the bits and pieces that they had nipped into the shop for.

The cashier who serving them said they may be able to take card payments but that it would just take a little while longer.

She said: “The power cut started at around 1:30pm and it has been going on for an hour now. We have not heard from the power company about when the electricity will return.”

A couple of doors along at the Istanbul barbers, a young man could be seen getting a trim as the barber used extra care due to the loss of lighting within the sore.

Thankfully the chair positioned next to the window gets a lot of natural light, so that the young man left looking fresh despite the issues.

The Mercat Bar and Kitchen was illuminated by candle light and those working at the bar said that this was the second time in three days that they had experienced the issue.

A member of staff said: “We had a power cut for around two hours on Sunday and then have had this again today. We have no idea what has caused this.

“We have not bothered contacting Scottish Power.”

All of the businesses that we passed or spoke to appeared to be getting on with their job and seemed unfazed by the fact there had been no power for extended periods over the last few days.

A spokesperson for Scottish Power Energy Networks said: “We’re sorry that a small number of customers in the West Maitland Street area were affected by a loss of power supplies on both Sunday 10th and Tuesday 12th April as the result of a fuse fault.

"Our engineers attended the site again yesterday and installed smart fuses to improve the resilience of the network while we continue to investigate what caused the issues in the first place.”
