Edinburgh and East Lothian gastropubs named among 'best in the UK'

An Edinburgh and East Lothian gastropub have been named amongst the best in the UK according to a recent competition that explores the most exciting and tastiest venues across the nation.

The capital is no stranger to some of its finest eateries being recognised in prestigious lists and competitions. In fact, it is something that business owners across the city have become accustomed to over the years.

On the Top 50 gastropubs website, they have taken a look at 100 venues across the UK and given the lowdown on what they have to offer, as well as where you can find them.

Food writers, business owners, executive and celebrity chefs are just some of the many hundred contributors that helped in making the extensive list.

As expected, destinations in London and other major English regions accounted for the majority of the places on the list, but of the three Scottish venues, two were situated within Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Tom Kitchin's award-winning Scran & Scallie, which is no stranger to being recognised amongst the best, was placed at number 56 on the list, with the judges recognising its famous surroundings and excellent variety of food.

They said: "A long-term favourite on the Top 50 Gastropubs list, this pub showcases great Scottish ‘scran’ alongside a range of traditionally brewed ales and artisan beers served against a cosy, family-friendly, backdrop.

"The Scran & Scallie has received rave reviews nationwide for nearly a decade thanks to its take on seasonal pub classics, a warm and welcoming approach to both service and its Scottish heritage, and a menu punctuated by a ‘from nature to plate’ philosophy.

"Inspired by 18th century menus and Robert Burns suppers of the time, the pub’s Scots language menus boast modern classics such as fish and chips, fish pie and Sunday roasts supplemented by seasonal plates including barbequed octopus, shellfish ravioli and duck terrine to name but a few."

Also making the list was The Bonnie Badger in Gullane, East Lothian, which crept in at number 93.

The pub, which also operates as a stylish hotel, was recognised for its incredible location and ability to offer such brilliant food whilst also offering guests a place to stay.

With a tantalising and sophisticated approach within a beautiful coastal village, The Bonnie Badger impressed judges with their selection of menus and innovative choices.

They said: "In the Broc Bar, menu highlights have included home-cured salmon and rye bread; goats cheese croquette with fennel and honey; and celeriac soup with chestnuts and apple to begin.

"Mains have included Highland Wagyu beef burger with chips; spelt and lentil burger with chips; and beef sausage and mash with onion gravy.

"Desserts have included sea buckthorn meringue; coffee ice cream sandwich; and vanilla crème brulee.

"The Stables menu, however, covers a more refined style of dining and is a one to try for the foodies."
