Edinburgh Airport shares travel checklist for travellers to avoid delays

Edinburgh Airport has shared a pre-travel for passengers to help them avoid last-minute panic and delays.

With people across the country heading out to enjoy some sun during what is expected to be a very busy holiday season, there will likely be substantial queues at the airport — making arriving on time especially important.

Many travellers will know that there is nothing worse than getting to the airport and then realising you left something very important back at home.

Other than checking that you have your passport and boarding pass, there are a number of additional things you need to remember — such as the current Covid restrictions at your destination.

Here is a roundup of Edinburgh Airport's pre-travel checklist to ensure your holiday is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Check your passport is up to date

While it's easy to assume that your passport is all ready to go, you never know until you check that it's actually up to date.

Edinburgh Airport said: "As international travel was off the table for so long many of us won’t have been looking at our passports as regularly. Check your passport didn’t expire without you realising, and if you see it’s out of date you’ll need to renew it urgently (visit gov.com to do this).

"Some countries require a certain amount of time left on your passport before expiry, and you can learn more about this in the Foreign Travel Advice section of the UK Government website."

Make yourself aware of the current travel restrictions at your destination

Even though there are no legal Covid restrictions in the UK anymore, many countries across the world still have them in place.

It is therefore important to check before you travel — ideally a few weeks — to give yourself plenty of time to ensure you're prepared for any rules at your destination.

Check in online to save time

This is a really simple one that could nonetheless make your journey far smoother than it would be otherwise.

Edinburgh Airport added: "During the busy summer months we sometimes see queues at check-in and, let’s be honest, who likes waiting in queues? Especially when you can check-in from the comfort of your own home.

"For bag drop we’ve put together a guide which outlines when bag drop opens, and when you should arrive at the airport to check your luggage in. Our advice? Don’t chance it. Arrive within this window."

Be aware of the luggage rules at the airport

It's important to check the luggage rules with the airline you are flying with specifically, as they all have their own restrictions.

If you want to ensure you avoid being forced to bin your belongings after getting to the airport, weigh your bag at home before leaving so you can be sure exactly how much it weighs.

Plan your travel arrangements

Those who book parking at Edinburgh Airport ahead of time can look at maps and directions for each of its carparks on its website.

The airport continued: "Roads in and around the airport can be busy at peak times – particularly if there are other events on in Edinburgh (and especially around Royal Highland Show time) so check for any travel updates on the day.

"You can also travel to the airport easily by bus, tram or taxi. You can even cycle if you’re travelling light.

"Security and check-in is well signposted, so once you arrive you’ll have no trouble finding your way. In the event of queues staff will be stationed around the airport to point you the right way."

Get to the airport on time but not too early

While it's always a good idea to arrive early at the airport, arriving too early can be counterproductive and cause lengthy queues.

Edinburgh Airport stated: "Your best bet is to check in before leaving the house and time your arrival so you’re here to drop off your luggage as soon as your bag drop opens. Then just make your way towards security.

"We’ve loads of great stuff for you enjoy once you get through security whether you want to bag a great deal at duty free or sip a cold drink in one of the bars. So why wait?"
