Edinburgh Airport issues Fringe advice for travellers in August

Edinburgh Airport has shared travel advice for those flying into the city for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

This year will mark the 75th anniversary of the Fringe, and hundreds of thousands people will visit the Scottish capital throughout August to enjoy live comedy, theatre, and more. It will also be the first full-scale festival since before the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the city set to get so busy, the thought of travelling to and from the airport can be daunting — particularly for those unfamiliar with Edinburgh.

In response, Edinburgh Airport has shared a guide covering the different transport options available. Whether you're staying in the city centre or slightly out of town, there are a number of different ways to get around.

Here is a rundown of Edinburgh Airport's Fringe travel guide. You can find the full guide here.

Bus

Those arriving into Edinburgh Airport who want to head directly to the city centre should hop on the Airlink100 bus, which can be found at Stop A next to the plaza. This service will take you straight to St Andrew Square, and it departs from the airport every ten minutes between 0430 and 0100, and every 30 minutes through the night.

There is also the Skylink 200, which travels from the airport to Ocean Terminal. This service, which leaves from Stop B next to the plaza, departs every 30 minutes and stops at Clermiston, Blackhall, Drylaw, Muirhouse. and Newhaven.

Additionally, you can catch the Skylink 300 from Stop C, which departs every 60 minutes and stops at west Edinburgh Park, Saughton, Slateford, Fountainbridge, and Bread Street. There is also the Skylink 400 to Fort Kinnard, which departs Stop C every 30 minutes and goes to Edinburgh Park, Fairmilehead, Royal Infirmary and Oxgangs.

Tram

According to Edinburgh Airport, "another quick and easy way to get into the city centre is by tram". Travellers can board the tram at the airport next to the plaza.

Services depart "frequently" between 7am and 10.40pm, and stop at the following locations:

  • Edinburgh Airport

  • Ingliston Park & Ride

  • Gogarburn

  • Edinburgh Gateway

  • Gyle Centre

  • Edinburgh Park Central

  • Edinburgh Park Station

  • Bankhead

  • Saughton

  • Balgreen

  • Murrayfield Stadium

  • Haymarket

  • West End - Princes Street

  • Princes Street

  • St Andrew Square

Car hire

If you would rather not rely on public transport, and would prefer to have your own car while in Edinburgh, you can find a car rental centre "just a few minutes' walk from the terminal". It is located across the plaza, past the covered walkway.

Edinburgh Airport states: "If hiring a car is your preferred option then you can take your pick from the following: Alamo, Europcar, Avis, National, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and Sixt.

"It should take little around 25 minutes to drive into the centre of Edinburgh from the airport. You can head up on to Glasgow Road and then either through Corstorphine or Murrayfield, or along Maybury Road and then into town via Queensferry Road.

"Glasgow Road also offers easy access to the City Bypass and the M8 and M9 if you are based elsewhere in Edinburgh and the Lothians."

Taxi or private hire

You can also find taxis and private hires at the airport that can take you to wherever you are going.

These are located in the airport's new East Terminus facility, which can be found across the plaza from the main terminal. If you have already booked, you can arrange your driver to meet you in the pick-up zone on the bottom floor of the multi-storey car park.
