Edinburgh Airport issue 'very busy' warning on first week of summer holidays

Edinburgh Airport have told arriving passengers that they are "very busy" and queues are 'longer than we would like' as the start of the school holidays in expected to prompt a sharp rise in flyers departing the capital.

Since they started issuing regular updates on how long it would take to clear security, from the back of the queue, the airport have kept passengers informed about potential delays and disruption. As expected, with Edinburgh and the Lothians children now broken up for their summer break, Monday's early morning update indicated an influx of holidaymakers.

Updating people at 5am on Monday, July 4, the airport posted a tweet saying: "Security update 0500 hrs As of a few minutes ago the time to get through security from first joining the queue was 40-60 minutes. We are very busy, and queues are longer than we would like. It's important you have prepared for security."

They also posted a link to a section on their site which points to common mistakes that passengers make going through security. With airports all over the country struggling since most Covid restrictions ended, Edinburgh Airport started issuing updates throughout the day, during busier periods, to let arriving flyers know what sort of delay they may be faced with.

The times are measured by how long it will take someone at the back of the queue to complete the security process, with chiefs advising passengers to arrive in time for check-in, not hours before, as doing so may cause considerable queues for other departing flyers.

The 5am update has proved to be one of the busiest times for the airport, with queues in recent months stretching to the outside of the main building. A string of delayed or cancelled flights from some of the nation's main airlines has also increased the strain.

With the summer holidays now begun until mid August, passengers can expect an increase in queue times and general delays if attending the airport, with the freedom of post-Covid restrictions meaning more families than ever are jetting off for a well-earned break in the sun.
