Edinburgh Airport flights cancelled as Heathrow axes 61 routes amid summer surge

Heathrow Airport has axed 61 flights in short notice on Monday, with some flights to and from Edinburgh Airport affected amongst the cancellations.

This comes as thousands of passengers have had their holidays and trips away thrown into chaos as airlines and airports across the UK are struggling to handle the surge of customers while dealing with staffing issues. British Airways flights to and from Edinburgh were cancelled today as Heathrow were forced to tell airlines to cut flights from terminals three and five as it couldn't deal with the amount of customers.

British Airways flight BA1447 to Heathrow from Edinburgh, due to take off at 4.25pm today, has been cancelled. Meanwhile, the following flights arriving from Heathrow to Edinburgh Airport were also cancelled: Flight BA1442 expected at 1.10pm and flight BA1444 expected at 3.45pm. This information is correct at the time the writing, according to Edinburgh Airport's website. You can check your flight status to and from Edinburgh Airport here.

A spokesperson for Heathrow said: “We are expecting higher passenger numbers in terminals three and five today than the airport currently has capacity to serve, and so to maintain a safe operation we have asked some airlines in terminals three and five to remove a combined total of 61 flights from the schedule.

“We apologise for the impact to travel plans and we are working closely with airlines to get affected passengers rebooked onto other flights.

“While Heathrow is ramping up resource and will have as many security officers this summer as we had pre-pandemic, airspace constraints across Europe and a lack of airline ground-handling staff can pose a risk to the smooth running of operations.

“As a result, we will take action where needed to ensure passengers receive the service level they deserve.”

Heathrow has also warned of more cuts if the previous schedule reductions are not enough to stop the disruption. Many holidaymakers from Edinburgh fly from the city to Heathrow for a connecting plane to their international destination. Edinburgh Live recently reported how a cancellation from Edinburgh to Heathrow left Edinburgh locals 'devastated' as their Disney Resort holiday was left in the balance.

What are your rights if your flight is cancelled?

According to Citizen's Advice, you have the legal right to either:

  • A full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights
  • A replacement flight to get you to your destination.
