Eddie Murphy took aim at Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap as he accepted an award at The Golden Globes on Tuesday.
The 61-year-old comedian and actor made the dig as he accepted a lifetime achievement award at the star-studded 80th annual ceremony in Los Angeles.
Speaking to the audience, Eddie said: "I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity... Just do these three things.
"One, pay your taxes. Two, mind your business. Three, keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!"
Eddie's joke made reference to the infamous moment Chris Rock made a joke about 54-year-old Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair, which sparked the I Am Legend actor to walk on to the stage and slap Chris, 57.
After the incident, Will returned to the seat and shouted at Chris: "Keep my wife's name out your f**king mouth."
Eddie wasn't the only person to reference the infamous slap, as host Jerrod Carmichael also made a joke aimed at the incident.
After an ad break, Jerrod said the ceremony had given the Rock Hudson award to Will for the "best portrayal of masculinity in television".
But, the joke didn't seem to go down well at the Beverly Hilton Hotel – and it certainly didn't hit the mark with viewers at home as viewers took to Twitter to complain.
One said: "Did I mishear that or did they just cheap a** joke demean Rock Hudson and Will Smith after the heartfelt LGBTQIA boosting by Ryan Murphy. #goldenglobes".
Another added: "What a weird joke to make about Will Smith - that wasn't a display of masculinity unless you put toxic in front of it. #GoldenGlobes2023".
A third said: "Will smith jokes in 2023? oh my god loserrr. booo," with a fourth agreeing: "A Will Smith joke in 2023 is wack and corny. #GoldenGlobes".
Since the incident, Will made a public apology in a tell-all video.
He said: "Chris; I apologise to you, my behaviour was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk."
It has later been claimed that Chris said during a stand up performance that he was offered the chance to do his own tell-all chat about the incident, sitting down with Oprah Winfrey.
However, according to reports, the comedian said he turned the offer down as he is determined not to "be a victim".
An audience member at Chris' Arizona Financial Theatre show told Entertainment Tonight: "During the evening, he did describe that he declined an offer to go onto Oprah to do to a sit-down interview and even a Super Bowl commercial with Will Smith himself."
They added: "He said, 'You are not gonna see me on any interviews crying my heart out about this. I am not going to be a victim'."
The crowd member went on: "I think we were all wondering if he was going to talk about that incident or not."
