Eddie Howe talks about Bruno Guimaraes' potential 'double 6' combination with Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says Joelinton's future at St James' Park is very much as an attacking force.

Howe has also hinted that new boy Bruno Guimaraes could also play alongside Jonjo Shelvey in his engine room.

The £40million man was brought to Tyneside from Hoffenheim as a forward but initially handed the number 9 jersey, creating extra expectations surrounding his big money move from the Bundesliga in 2019.

But after a tough start to life in the Premier League, Joelinton has settled at the club - particularly under Howe - playing a little further back in midfield.

Howe, though, does not see him as a permanent feature of his engine room with his fellow countryman Bruno set to play behind him.

The Toon head coach also hinted that Bruno and Jonjo Shelvey may even play together.

Howe said: "I see Joelinton as an attacker.

"I would not put a label on him a midfielder.

"He is an attacker who is playing attacking midfielder at the moment.

"He's definitely got versatility.

"Joelinton has played in lots of positions for the club, he has played wide but his natural instinct is he wants to create and attack.

"What has impressed most is that defensive awareness has been incredible.

"His work-rate for the team is incredible.

"I think he trained three or four days from the two and half weeks that we trained since or last game but phsyically you wouldn't have known that.

"I thought he was immense again."

And expanding on the possibilities for Bruno and his new midfield colleagues, Howe added: "Bruno can play in any position in midfield, as an 8, a 6 or a double 6 next to Jonjo.

"That is the beauty of him and why we love him so much.

"It creates a really nice pressure on the team to perform because we have very good players.

"Again, I go back to Sean Longstaff as well, how he's played in recent weeks, there is healthy pressure in that area."
