Eddie Howe offers clue about the profile Newcastle will target in final days of transfer window

Eddie Howe has stressed that Newcastle United need to sign the 'right' players in the final days of the transfer window as the Magpies' boss targets signings of the 'calibre' of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Newcastle signed Trippier and Wood within the first fortnight of the window in what may prove the most straightforward transfers the club will do this month.

Atletico Madrid, after all, were willing to respect Trippier's wishes to return to the north of England while Newcastle activated the £25m release clause in Wood's contract at Burnley.

Moves for Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos and Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard have not been so easy and Newcastle are working through a list of alternative targets in case these complex deals do not come off.

Having already warned about the perils of 'dipping below the line' late in the window, Howe drove home that message once again when the Newcastle head coach was asked if he expected to make further signings before the window shuts on Monday night.

"We hope to, especially with what happened with three players coming off the pitch," he told Match of the Day after Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett and Joelinton all hobbled off in Saturday's win at Leeds.

"I'm not sure how serious they are. The squad's going to be stretched. We were stretched anyway so we hope to, but I've said all window it's got to be the right players.

"I think you can see the two boys that we have brought in have made a real difference to the team so we're looking at players of that calibre."
