Eddie Howe gives Callum Wilson update for Liverpool clash before fresh Newcastle United injury blow

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is hopeful that Callum Wilson will be fit to face Liverpool next weekend.

Wilson was left out of the Magpies' squad for their trip to Bournemouth tonight after it was revealed he had suffered a "hamstring complaint". The striker is Newcastle's second top-scorer with seven goals in 16 Premier League appearances.

Injuries continue to hamper the England international's progression at St James' Park but he has managed to avoid lengthy spells on the treatment table this season, starting 67 per cent of the Toon Army's games. And there is a chance he could return to take on Liverpool on Tyneside next Saturday night.

"Callum just has a minor hamstring complaint. We think he'll miss this game, we'll hope to get him back for the next one. Yeah [not long term], fingers crossed," Howe said prior to Newcastle's encounter with his - and Wilson's - former club Bournemouth.

The forward, who put the Magpies in front in their 1-1 home draw with West Ham United last weekend, missed the corresponding fixture with Liverpool with a hamstring injury. Jurgen Klopp's side won 2-1 thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time strike from Fabio Carvalho. It remains Newcastle sole Premier League defeat so far this season.

Wilson's place in the Toon Army's line-up tonight has been taken by £60m summer signing Alexander Isak, who opened his Magpies account in the fixture at Anfield.

During their match with Bournemouth this evening, Howe was handed another injury concern after he was forced into an early change. Joe Willock limped off after 36 minutes with what appeared to be a muscle injury. He was replaced by Anthony Gordon, who made a £45m move from Everton to Newcastle during the January transfer window.
