Eddie Howe admits uncertainty over Joelinton injury in boost for Tottenham ahead of Newcastle clash

Joelinton is a major doubt for Newcastle’s trip to Tottenham on Sunday after Eddie Howe admitted his uncertainty over the Brazilian’s knee injury.

Howe took the midfielder off at half-time of the midweek win over Everton, something he described as a sign of a potentially serious problem.

“He had a knock to the side of his knee, it was quite an unusual one as we thought he could run it off,” he told reporters.

“Joe is a lad that is very, very mentally strong and has played with lots of different things in my time here. But when he said he had to come off at half-time we knew there was potentially an issue there.

“We're hopeful it's not serious but at this moment it's still slightly unclear.”

Allan Saint-Maximin will miss the game in north London but Howe described the winger’s “good progress” from a hamstring injury.

Also absent for Newcastle in Tottenham will be Alexander Isak, Karl Darlow, Matt Ritchie and Emil Krafth. Jonjo Shelvey is tipped to make the bench after summer surgery on a hamstring issue.
