Ed Sheeran sings Friends-inspired ballad to Courteney Cox

Ed Sheeran has shared a clip of himself serenading Friends star Courtney Cox with his new song American Town.

The singer took to Instagram on Thursday, September 21, to show the snippet in which he is crooning to the actress and revealing that the tune was inspired by her TV sitcom Friends.

He said: “Courteney, I wrote a song inspired by Friends, the show you were on and I’m going to play it to you. It’s called American Town.”

He then sings: “We’re a long way from home, haven’t seen you in so long / But it all came back in one moment.

“We ate Chinese food in small white boxes / Live the life we saw in Friends.”

As he wrapped up the brief performance, Cox asked: “Wait, that was really about the show Friends?”

To which Sheeran responded: “Well, inspired by it. Because you eat Chinese food in small white boxes, living the life we saw in Friends.”

The actress joked: “Wow I love that, wow. Do I get paid?”

Alongside the video, also shared on Instagram, the Thinking Out Loud star wrote: “Impromptu kitchen jam of American Town with my landlady Courteney Cox, sorry for the late rent, I’m good for it."

The pair have been friends for over a decade and Sheeran was who introduced Cox to her longterm partner Johnny McDaid, who is in the band Snow Patrol.

American Town is expected to be on Sheeran’s upcoming album, Autumn Variations, which is his second release of the year, following Subtract in May. The album is set to drop on September 29 through his own Gingerbread Man Records

Sheeran recently announced two special performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall on November 18-19, where he will treat fans to a live rendition of Autumn Variations, accompanied by a live band and string section.
