Ed Sheeran has shared an odd video of his face superimposed with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle filter for his Instagram comeback.

The singer, 31, took a hiatus from the social media platform last November, and told fans it was due to “turbulent things" in his personal life and that his Instagram page had become a bit “boring".

This week, he returned with a clip of himself as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle in what was seemingly an attempt to jazz up his profile.

He said in the video of his face distorted by the green cartoon filter: “People keep asking me ‘where have I been?’ Where haven’t I been?!”

The video concludes with him laughing maniacally.

Fans were left bemused by the move and joked that Sheeran perhaps needed to take yet another social media break.

One wrote: “Maybe your return is a bit premature, Ed? Delete this and try again in a few weeks."

Another quipped: “Well, this certainly isn’t boring. Weird and a bit worrying, yes. Boring, no."

Another added: “Bestie, respectfully, what the f***?"

While a fourth wrote: “Is this how it’s gonna be from now on? Are you high? lol I kind of like this new direction."

The singer explained that he’d taken a break because he ‘had some turbulent things happening in my personal life’ (Instagram/teddysphotos)

Another follower wrote: “now THIS is content".

Earlier this week, the  father-of-two said in an Instagram video that he didn’t want to “pretend to be something he wasn’t" by posting during his personal troubles.

He explained: “I realise I haven’t been that engaged in my social media or fan base over the last couple of years and the things that have been posted on this account might have got a bit boring. I’m sorry, that’s my fault.

“The reason I’m making this video, just being totally honest, I’ve had some turbulent things happening in my personal life so I just didn’t really feel like being online and pretending to be something I’m not when I wasn’t really feeling like that.’

Sheeran was left devastated following the death of his pal Jamal Edwards (R) last year (Jamal Edwards/Instagram)

He added: "I know that sounds weird, but hence I’m making this video to say things are looking up and I’m back online."

In November, sharing a behind-the-scenes snap overlooking a beach during filming his music video, he wrote: "Signing off now until 2023. See you in the new year. Much love, Ed x."

In February, he was left devastated when his close friend, music entrepreneur, Jamal Edwards tragically died after a cardiac arrest from cocaine and alcohol consumption.
