New Delhi: The Government has appointed Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar as the new Election Commissioners.
A meeting of the 3-member selection committee on the appointment of Election Commissioners was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The other two members included Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhary.

Retired IAS Sukhbir Singh Sandhu (UK:88) and Gyanesh Kumar (KL:88) are the top contenders for the post of two Election Commissioners among 212 candidates.
A total 212 candidates were there in the list but only six names were forwarded to the Selection Committee for consideration. Finally the names of Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar were selected as Election Commissioners.
Sukhbir Singh Sandhu:
A retired IAS officer, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu (UK:88) has been the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand. Earlier, Sandhu was the Chairperson of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
Sukhbir Singh Sandhu did his MBBS from Government Medical College, Amritsar and also has a Master's Degree in History from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
He also possesses a law degree.
Gyanesh Kumar:
Gyanesh Kumar (KL:88), a retired IAS officer, has been the Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation. Kumar played a big role in the Cooperation Ministry under Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Before that, Gyanesh Kumar was Joint Secretary, Kashmir Division in the Home Ministry. When Section 370 was abrogated in Jammu and Kashmir, Gyanesh Kumar was promoted and became Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry.
Both Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar are considered as extremely efficient administrators in the country.
