easyJet flight cancellation leaves NI family 'stuck' overnight at Faro Airport

An NI family says they were 'stuck' overnight at Faro Airport after their flight back to Belfast International was cancelled.

Natasha McMillan told Belfast Live her easyJet flight was scheduled to depart at 8pm on Monday night, June 6.

It was delayed and later on cancelled.

The family say they are now out nearly £3,500 after booking a different flight home for Tuesday morning with a different airline.

The 31-year-old nursery assistant told Belfast Live: "We flew out to Faro last Monday. It was a family holiday for my daddy's 60th birthday.

"When we got the airport, it was delayed until half past nine. I then actually got a message from my friend in Belfast saying was my flight cancelled, and I said 'oh no, please don't'. She had screenshotted from what she seen on the website in Belfast International Airport arrivals, it had shown cancellations there before we had even known in Faro.

"It showed in Belfast that we were cancelled but we hadn't even known.

"I haven't heard one thing, not an email or nothing from easyJet."

The West Belfast woman added: "We had to book Jet2 flights for this morning [Tuesday]. We had to book them last night as we thought 'we need to get home'.

"EasyJet have put on a flight now that's leaving at 10am [Tuesday]. I wasn't offered it back home.

"I was meant to be in work today. My child is meant to be at school. The kids are all missing school. They had to sleep on the chairs.

"My niece has a GCSE tomorrow and she is in an awful state.

"We are stressed out and just worried. We are glad now that we have booked this flight but we are out nearly £3,500 between us all. We had to stay in the airport last night.

"We didn't have the money to go to a hotel and stay.

"There are 12 of us altogether. It has put me off even going away again."

An easyJet spokesperson said: "We are very sorry that Ms McMillan’s flight EZY6796 from Faro to Belfast on 6 June was cancelled. We provided customers with options to rebook or receive a full refund as well as hotel accommodation, along with information on how to arrange this online or via the app.

"Nonetheless, we fully understand the disruption this will have caused to their plans and we are very sorry for this. Our team will be reaching out to Ms McMillan to apologise for her family’s experience. We will also be reimbursing them for expenses incurred as a result of the cancellation.”
