Eastern Kentucky schools report significantly low attendance

Many Kentucky school districts are dealing with significantly low attendance numbers. First historic flooding then an early appearance of seasonal respiratory illnesses both contributed to low attendance.

This fall, many districts used NTI Days, or canceled classes entirely in an attempt to slow the spread that was keeping students and staff home. However, at a recent meeting of superintendents, several reported attendance rates still lingering in the upper 70 to lower 80 percent range. They say this is a problem because schools are funded based in part on attendance.

Education Commissioner Jason Glass said the K-D-E will advocate within the legislature for more flexibility in state law.
