Eastern Kentucky motorists can expect traffic delays this week on the Mountain Parkway

Motorists traveling along a portion of the Mountain Parkway in eastern Kentucky could experience some stop-and-start traffic Tuesday afternoon. H.B. Elkins is public information officer with the District Ten State Transportation Department Office. Elkins says a newly completed section will be opened up to travel about ten miles west of Salyersville.

“But, they’re gonna move two-way traffic onto the new alignment and work to eliminate the old alignment…tear down the bridges involved with that old alignment…build a new exit,” said Elkins.

Elkins said the Mountain Parkway expansion is all about eliminating dangerous areas, often found in curves. He noted any delays shouldn’t be longer than about ten to 15 minutes.

In time, this section will become a four-lane divided highway. Elkins said more and more sections are being built for 70 miles per hour postings.

“Time that may have been lost in the past driving 55 the whole thing could be made back up when they’re doing 70 miles an hour on the sections that are open,” said Elkins

Elkins said motorists are reminded to slow down in these areas. State police troopers are expected to be on-site at the traffic switch locations for multiple weeks.
