Easter Nerd Fest in Newcastle welcomes Predator star as its big surprise guest

A former basketball player for the Newcastle Eagles who went on to make an impression on the big screen as an alien Predator is to be a special guest at the next Nerd Fest in Newcastle.

Ian Whyte, who appeared in the Alien vs Predator films and also had roles in Clash of the Titans and Prometheus and on TV in Game of Thrones, is to attend the popular Nerd Fest taking place at The Boiler Shop in the city on Easter Monday where he will be signing autographs. The event, which raises money for the Cash for Kids charity supporting disadvantaged children in the North East, is always a popular one with families, with attractions including the likes of film characters, props and movie vehicles.

Its last outing, a Halloween-theme Nerd Fright Fest in October included a Ghostbusters car, retro games, film sets and plenty of cosplay. Now preparations are gathering pace for the April 10 Nerd Fest whose highlights this time will include a Back To The Future DeLorean and a Johnny Five live action robot like the one in the Short Circuit movies.

There also will be lots of traders selling all manner of geeky merchandise, say organisers. The Nerd Fright Fest is run by The North East Retro Den which celebrates everything retro, from video games to art and clothing.

Michael Henderson, who runs the Nerd Arcade shop in Felling, Gateshead, helped it set up with pal Michael Coxon and both are long-term supporters of Cash for Kids. Tickets for Nerd Fest are available via Eventbrite and also will be on sale on the door on the day.
