EastEnders stars grief-stricken as Dr Harold Legg star Leonard Fenton laid to rest

EastEnders stars were heartbroken as they arrived at the funeral of Dr Harold Legg star Leonard Fenton.

As Dr Harold Legg, Leonard appeared on the BBC soap from its start in 1985 until 1997, before returning for brief stints in 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2018 until 2019.

On January 31, it was sadly announced that the soap star died aged 95 two days prior. His family released a statement.

Mourners were pictured arriving at the seasoned actor's funeral on Wednesday, February 9.

Those attending the funeral include soap actor Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell in the BBC soap series.

He shook hands with John Altman - who plays Nick Cotton in the show - as they entered the facility in north London.

John caught up with his co-stars in attendance, including Tom Watt (who played Lofty Holloway) and Linda Davidson (who played Mary Smith).

The late Leonard appeared in a total of 267 episodes in the hit BBC programme, so it's no surprise so many co-stars paid their respects on Wednesday.

Following his death, his family shared the devastating news with fans.

A statement from his family said: “The family of the actor Leonard Fenton are heartbroken to announce his death at the age of 95 on Saturday January 29. Best known for his role as Dr Legg on EastEnders, Leonard’s acting career spanned more than 60 years.

“He worked in TV and film and his long stage career included time at the National Theatre and most recently the Royal Shakespeare Company.

"He felt privileged to have worked with some of the greats of the theatre, including Samuel Beckett, Orson Welles and Jonathan Miller.

"His passion for painting and singing pre-dated his acting career and was equally as important to him.

"He will be missed beyond words by his family. We feel incredibly lucky to have been able to be with him as his health worsened towards the end – a privilege denied to so many during these tough times.”

Leonard's last appearance between 2018 and 2019 had his character return to see former patient Dot Cotton (played by June Brown).

Dot was the one who was by Dr Legg's side when he passed away from pancreatic cancer.

June and Leonard were pals in real life, with the actress paying tribute to him following his death.

“I first met Leonard as Dr Legg when I joined the cast of EastEnders as Dot, his hypochondriac patient, in 1985," she wrote.

“He was a charming man in all ways, first as a person and then as an actor, extremely polite and kind.

“I enjoyed working with him enormously for many years and missed him when he retired.

“I was glad that I’d been with him for his last scene with Dot at his bedside and my thoughts are with his devoted family.”
