EastEnders star Shona McGarty cried when she first read Whitney's intesne baby storyline

EastEnders star Shona McGarty has recalled getting upset when she initially read her EastEnders character Whitney Dean's baby storyline.

The actress admitted that she 'cried' when she found out the 'awful' plot which involves her getting pregnant with Zack's child.

The 31-year-old has taken on the character of Whitney since 2008 and is now set to take on one of her most dramatic storylines yet.

After some signs that she could be expecting, Whitney goes to the pharmacy where she bumps into Stacey who is there for the same reason.

Talking about Whitney's initial reaction to finding out she is pregnancy, Shona said that she is scared but admits it is something she has always wanted.

She said: "Her first reaction is she's really scared and worried! She's worried because she's not in a relationship with Zack - they were just casually sleeping together.

"I guess she just feels like she's not settled, and she's unsure about the future, and she's got to decide whether she can do it on her own. But equally, it's something that Whitney's always wanted her whole life."

According to the Daily Star, Shona says that Whitney wants to tell Zack the news but finds it difficult due to him being selfish.

The soap star explained: "It's really hard for Whitney to tell him because every time she tries to, he's either so wrapped up in going to the gym or going for a run, or he's always talking about himself.

"Zack's quite a selfish character, and also, there's one opportunity when he gets a phone call, and Whitney overhears him saying, 'Of course, I remember your name' to some girl on the phone!

"That nails it home for Whitney that this isn't going to happen. It's awful because Whitney feels like she's potentially going to clip his wings."

Shona said that when Whitney does eventually tell Zack, he gives an 'unexpected' reaction.

Despite this, she said that Whitney is supported by Chelsea, Finlay and Felix who rally round her.

Shona explained that when she first read the script she 'actually cried, describing it as 'so beautiful'.

Fans have recently commented on the potential for Whitney and Finlay's relationship to turn romantic.

However Shona shut down speculation that their relationship could develop into something more, saying they are just close friends despite Whitney trying to kiss him in the past.
