EastEnders' Kara Tointon vows she'll never return to the soap as she hits out at scheduling

Kara Tointon has made her thoughts perfectly clear on a potential return to EastEnders - it's not happening.

The actress, 39, was a popular figure as she played the role of Dawn Swann between 2005 and 2009. And while she admits she's amazed at how long her character's memory is sticking around with viewers, she's confessed she'll never return to Walford.

She revealed she's asked about returning on a yearly basis, saying it's by far her stand-out role to date.

But, as she continues filing for ITV's new Carrie Grant biopic titled Archie, she said she can't see her ever returning to the set as she's enjoying doing "lots of other things".

And she admitted she fears for soaps in general following the demise of Neighbours earlier in the year. EastEnders' viewing figures continue to dwindle and Kara believes other shows might have the same fate as Neighbours in the near future.

Currently, research from Broadcast magazine said the number of 16-34 year-olds watching EastEnders dropped from 1.3 million people in 2017 to only 447,000 this year.

Kara's concern is the number of episodes that are constantly churned out by soaps as people simply don't have the spare time to fit them all into their viewing schedules.

Speaking to The Sun while promoting her storytelling app, TELL, she said: "You can’t catch up because things are moving so fast. It’s so lovely what they achieve, the serial dramas. To do the amount of work they do, in a short period of time and just keep going is quite a feat.

“It’s an amazing production line but I think they could take it back to two times a week and have more time to… You wonder how things are going and how long those serial dramas will sustain."

She admitted she no longer watches the soaps as being a mother-of-two and working, she simply doesn't have time to keep up with the changing storylines.

"I’m in a time where I’m not watching as much as I would ordinarily because I’m in bed by 9 o’clock if I’m run off my feet so I watch entertainment when it suits me and when I can," she added.

One show she does continue to watch is Strictly. Kara starred on the ballroom floor in 2010 with her then boyfriend Artem Chigvintsev.
