EastEnders' June Brown remembered by Natalie Cassidy in touching tribute as soap star dies

BBC's The One Show aired a moving tribute on Monday to EastEnders legend June Brown, who has died at the age of 95 - with her co-star Natalie Cassidy recalling some of their last conversations.

The soap favourite played Dot Cotton on the BBC series for 35 years, starting in 1985 shortly after it first launched.

On The One Show on Monday night, hours after the news of her death broke, the show paid tribute to the late star.

As well as showing clips from her time on the soap and her time on the BBC evening show, they welcomed Sonia Fowler actress Natalie on to speak about the late star.

As she paid tribute to her late friend, she recalled the "honour" she felt when she featured in a two-hander with June a while ago.

Natalie confessed there was a scene that featured in this episode that aired in 2002 that they still remembered years later, even recently.

She explained: "It wasn't really meant to go as it did and I sort of lost the plot a bit, and I did this scene and afterwards, even up to I'd say eight months ago when we spoke, she always spoke about that scene.

"She'd say, 'Do you remember that scene when the magic just happened?' and something happened that wasn't meant to happen. It was a special scene to us and a special episode, and that's what I remember fondly."

Paying tribute to her friend, she added: "I dunno where to start really, it's a really sad day. She was an absolute powerhouse, she was incredible to work with.

"She was fun, she was professional, she was cheeky and naughty at the same time, she is just gonna be so dearly missed by all."

Iconic June's final scenes as Dot aired in 2020 when she left Walford for good, while the character has been mentioned and visited by other characters numerous times since then, even in recent scenes.

Dot still has roots to Walford, with her late husband Jim Branning's family still there including his granddaughter Sonia, while Dot's granddaughter Dotty is also on the show.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, EastEnders confirmed the news of June's death and shared a statement on behalf of her family.
