EastEnders fans slam 'weak gesture' tribute to Arthur Fowler star Bill Treacher

EastEnders fans are not happy with their "weak" tribute to Bill Treacher who famously played Arthur Fowler following his recent death.

The star died aged 92 on Saturday after a string of health issues, his representative confirmed on Tuesday [November 8], with the BBC One soap paying tribute later that evening.

Since the announcement of Bill's death, tributes poured in from across the nation with many believing that the family favourite soap would also share a loving tribute.

However, Bill received a one-sentence tribute just moments before the opening sequence of the soap just hours after the news of his death.

A narrator said: "Now on BBC One, a mention for EastEnders actor Bill Treacher who sadly passed away. Back in Walford now, Suki is under arrest."

Shortly after the announcement, viewers took to Twitter to share their frustration, with one saying: "No tribute to Bill Treacher at the end of EastEnders", while a second responded: "Was thinking the same thing? Could have shown a pic or something!"

"Sorry, but The One Show did a nicer tribute to Bill Treacher than EastEnders did what’s that all about?" fumed a second.

Before a third said: "That tribute at the beginning of EastEnders was lovely but expected something a bit more. Bit of a weak gesture for such a ledge [sic]!"

During his appearance on the show, Bill played the husband of Pauline and the dad of Martin Fowler between 1985 and 1996, before he was killed off.

Arthur suffered from a brain haemorrhage caused by a head injury that he sustained during a prison riot.

Away from his work on screen, Bill had his own health battles, suffering from ataxia which causes people to become "clumsy" due to poor muscle control.

His heartbreaking death was announced by his devastated relatives in a statement which read: "The family of the actor Bill Treacher are sad to announce that Bill died late Saturday night, 5 November 2022.

"He was 92 years old and his health had been declining for some time. He was much loved by his wife, Kate, his son, Jamie and his daughter, Sophie.

"Bill was a brilliant actor and a wonderful husband and father, plus a very fine human being.

"He will be hugely missed. The family respectfully request privacy at this time."

Meanwhile, an EastEnders spokesperson added: "It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Bill Treacher.

"As one of our original cast members, Bill created a much-loved character in Arthur Fowler and, alongside Wendy Richard, they created an iconic family in the Fowlers who still remain at the heart of the show."

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
