EastEnders aired the start of Janine Butcher's downfall on Monday night, ahead of dramatic Christmas scenes that could see her partner Mick Carter killed off.
But many viewers were distracted by a mystery character who entered the storyline, during a phone call with Janine.
They weren't the only ones confused though, as Mick's mother Shirley Carter was just as baffled and keen to find out the truth.
It came as Shirley continued to want answers over Janine's antics, ahead of her wedding to Mick this week.
Despite her attempts to reconcile Mick with his estranged wife Linda Carter, Mick made it clear he saw a future with pregnant Janine and that they were moving away.
On Monday, fans saw Janine finally break the news to her young daughter Scarlett about the move and she was not happy at all.
Prior to this, Shirley overheard Janine making secret arrangements on the phone with someone called Steve and she was concerned.
As she questioned who the man was, with no details given, viewers were also wondering who Steve was and why Janine was planning to meet him.
Taking to Twitter, viewers shared their confusion as others predicted Janine could be cheating on Mick.
One viewer said: "Who is Steve? Is Janine cheating on Mick?? I gots to know."
Another viewer tweeted: "Who the f**k is this steve person janine’s on the phone to?"
A third viewer said: "who the hell is this steve," as another commented: "who tf is steve?"
Also in the episode, Shirley was listening in just as Scarlett nearly gave away Janine's recent lies.
Janine has been targeting Linda ever since she arrived back in Walford last year - and she immediately set her sights on Mick.
After initially trying to get rid of Linda, the pair ended up having a car accident - only for Janine to flee the scene, and she pretended Linda was the driver.
Only Scarlett currently knows her mother lied about her whereabouts on the day of the crash, and she has hidden the evidence.
Scarlett wasn't happy about having to move away and suggested Mick could end up finding out she had lied to him.
As Janine made it clear Mick must never learn the truth, Shirley overheard what they were saying - but is it enough to confront Janine?
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
