Duncan Boyd is returning to EastEnders after over three decades away from Albert Square.
Actor David Gillespie is set to reprise his role as Duncan for a short stint on the BBC soap, with his scenes set to air later this month. It will be nearly 34 years since he was last seen in Walford and he soon reunites with his former flame, Sharon.
Duncan arrived in Walford back in 1987, where he was the curate of the local church. He soon got involved with Sharon Watts, who used the church as somewhere for her to seek refuge and support amid her struggles at home.
Struggling with her parents, Den and Angie Watts, Sharon was comforted with Duncan, who she soon developed feelings for - with the pair later engaged to be married before she called it off when he received a job offer at a parish in Wiltshire.
He will now return to Albert Square to officiate the christening of little Albie, not realising that it is her son. Whilst he is only there for a short while, his arrival will no doubt cause some chaos when his past life with Sharon is revealed.
David said of his return: "I have to say what a pleasure it was being back in EastEnders reviving my role as Duncan after over 30 years of leaving the show – a little strange at first but 'nice strange'. The only people I knew were my old mates Letitia and Gillian but I was made to feel instantly at home by such a wonderful cast and great crew – lots of new friends. Fabulous!"
Chris Clenshaw, Executive Producer, added: "It’s wonderful to welcome David back to the role of Duncan Boyd. Although we haven’t seen Duncan for over three decades, his character shares a romantic history with one of the show’s iconic matriarchs, Sharon. We’re delighted to have him back for a short while as he unknowingly stirs up drama between the happy couple."
There have been some huge returns to EastEnders as of late, with the likes of Colin Russell (Lord Michael Cashman CBE), Barry Clark (Gary Hailes) George ‘Lofty’ Holloway (Tom Watt), Mary ‘the punk’ Smith (Linda Davidson) and Disa O’Brien (Jan Graveson) will join Dot’s step-granddaughter Lauren Branning ( Jacqueline Jossa ) all returning to bid farewell to soap icon, Dot Branning.
*EastEnders airs Mondays through Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One.
