East Lothian man almost mowed down smokers after being chucked out of miners' club

A plumber nearly mowed down a group of smokers in his car after being chucked out a Scottish miners' club.

Jack Gillan was turfed out the Wallyford Miners' Club in East Lothian by staff and immediately got behind the wheel. The 22-year-old almost struck the group outside the club before mounting the pavement, reports the Record.

A concerned staff member ran over to the vehicle and demanded he surrender the keys. Gillan appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday and pled guilty to a charge of dangerous driving, having consumed alcohol.

Fiscal depute Oliver Davidson-Richards said the incident took place at around 11pm after Gillan, who had been drinking, was asked to leave the premises.

Mr Davidson-Richards said: "The accused then entered the vehicle and attempted to move out of the car park, almost hitting people who were outside smoking." The court heard police were contacted as Gillan, of Musselburgh, East Lothian, fled towards Wallyford train station.

Defence agent Mr Stewart said there had been an "altercation" in the club which left Gillan thinking that his car had been "damaged by a certain individual". Mr Stewart said his client made the "foolish decision" to try and move his car into an area covered by CCTV.

Sheriff Roderick Flinn said Gillan's actions on October 21 last year were "foolish in the extreme". He banned Gillan from driving for 12 months, ordered him to resit his driving test, and fined him £320.
