East Lothian hotel named one of UK's top beach stays by Conde Nast

A much-loved East Lothian hotel has been named as one of the top beach stays in the UK.

Conde Nast Traveller this week published a guide to the best beach hotels across the country, with a number of entries located in Cornwall and Devon, as well as accommodation in the likes of Wales and on the Channel Islands.

Only two Scottish spots made their list of their list of 15, including the excellent Bonnie Badger in Gullane. It was accompanied in the guide by the famous Kinloch Lodge on the Isle of Skye.

In particular, the Conde Nast team singled out The Bonnie Badger for its brilliant pub lunches, while hailing the hotel's design and decor.

They said: "Ivy-covered pub-with-rooms The Bonnie Badger is worth a stop for more than just its quirky name.

"Retro furniture, eccentric wallpaper from Edinburgh-based artist Mairi Helena, deep-blue walls and enormous bathtubs have brought this East Lothian spot up to the minute – all part of a renovation overseen by The Badger’s owners, chef Tom Kitchin and his wife. As you’d expect from the Michelin-starred chef, the suppers served at the two-storey Stables Dining Room are not to be missed.

"Order a hearty roast rack of Borders lamb, a braised shin of Highland Wagyu beef, or North Sea monkfish wrapped in pancetta.

"It’s less than five minutes’ walk to the beach, or drive 10 minutes east to North Berwick, Scotland’s coolest seaside town, where you’ll find industrial coffee shops such as Steampunk Coffee Roasters and Bostock Bakery, where Noma ’s René Redzepi sent his assistant to learn to make their famous flaky croissants."

Earlier this week, we reported on Bonnie Badger coming up trumps again after the Gullane venue was voted as the best in its region at the National Pub & Bar Awards 2022.

Meanwhile, the highly-revered hotel and restaurant has recently launched a series of exclusive events allowing guests and locals to learn about and explore the enviable East Lothian coastline and the array of wild herbs, plants, flora and fungi the area boasts.

The Forage & Feast seasonal series of workshops commence with a spring event on Friday April 22, in collaboration with Wee Folk of the Woods – a long standing and trusted supplier of Chef Tom Kitchin and Kitchin Group.

Foraging for plants, fungi, sea plants, herbs and berries, guests will have the chance to embark on a foraging adventure, learning about the wealth of wild foods available along the East Lothian coastline.

Led by foraging duo Wee Folk of the Woods and one of The Bonnie Badger’s talented chefs, guests will hear from the experts on when, where and how to forage for edible and medicinal plants, as well as learning about ways to use the ingredients in cooking, safely and satisfyingly.

Following the morning spent foraging, guests will return to The Bonnie Badger to enjoy an exclusive 3-course lunch inclusive of a welcome cocktail, all inspired by the ingredients explored on the excursion and served in the stylish private dining room.

To find out more about the experience and to book in on either April 22, June 17 or September 2, you can visit The Bonnie Badger website here.
